Dean's Welcome

The College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences:
Feeding the Mind and Nourishing the Soul

It is my privilege to welcome you to the intellectual and creative community of scholars that is The College of Humanities, Arts, & Social Sciences (HASS). The disciplines represented in the College's various fields of study feed the mind and nourish the soul of our students, facilitating the development of their full human potential. The College of HASS enables personal, intellectual, professional, and emotional development, preparing students for civic engagement in their local and global communities. As they engage in our liberal arts curriculum, they become skilled in constructive and critical analyses; they become well versed in disciplinary and multidisciplinary perspectives; and they communicate and learn about themselves through written, spoken, and artistic expression. HASS students leave Utah State University with a well-rounded education that prepares them for lifelong learning, community and organizational leadership, and an appreciation for how the arts contribute to their quality of life.

Award winning and internationally renowned faculty members lead students through any one of the numerous undergraduate and graduate majors among the College's twelve academic departments and multiple programs. Fields of study include multidisciplinary perspectives and many international study options, including those facilitated by HASS faculty in France, Italy, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Egypt, England, Scotland, and Switzerland. Internship opportunities add even more to our students' preparation for their futures. Examples of HASS internships include those in The United States Senate, the Smithsonian, our Archeology Field School, tech writing interns are placed with the Space Dynamics Lab, and the HASS Undergraduate Teaching Fellows Program, in which undergraduate students work with faculty in teaching assignments in the classroom. Our Aerospace Science and Military Science Departments also provide a unique opportunity for University students to attend classes that will further advance their leadership skills and provide an avenue for them to become officers within the United States Armed Forces after graduation.

Among the dedicated HASS faculty are an internationally renowned choir director; acclaimed and award-winning musicians, artists, interior designers, and authors; winners of the prestigious Carnegie Professor award; and recipients of research awards from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Research Initiative, and the U.S. Department of Education. Isotope: A Journal of Literary Nature and Science Writing also received an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. HASS faculty also includes policy analysts who have consulted with federal commissions on issues of national importance.

Students with degrees from HASS have gone on to stimulating careers that include graphic design for Pixar and Swatch, serving on staff for Senators Ted Kennedy and Orrin Hatch, designing interiors for major firms in New York, Paris, and London, working to improve public health in Gambia, lighting design for Disney, designing landscapes for upscale Aspen homes, and planning environmentally and ecologically sound communities. A HASS education also prepares students to pursue graduate degrees, which is a path that many of our students follow. Alumni include CEOs, city planners, Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management managers, lawyers, judges, district attorneys, artists, teachers, forensic anthropologists, musicians, and prize-winning authors.

The College's Humanities-focused areas of study include English, American Studies, History, French, German, Spanish, Philosophy, Speech Communication, Liberal Arts, Asian Studies, and Religious Studies. Arts-focused areas include Music, Theater, Art, Interior Design, Creative Writing, and Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning. Social Science-focused areas include Journalism and Communication, International Studies, Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, and Social Work. Also parts of HASS are Utah Public Radio; The Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art; The Anthropology Museum; Air Force and Army Military Sciences; and a world-class performance venue, the Manon Caine Russell Kathryn Caine Wanlass Performance Hall. In addition, HASS houses several leading academic journals, providing graduate and undergraduate students with publishing experience while working side by side with leading scholars in their fields.

With each passing day, I am increasingly amazed with and impressed by the incredible talent of our faculty and students, as well as the dedication of our staff. Newcomers to HASS are embraced and motivated by the pride, enthusiasm, and passion for learning expressed by our community of Aggies. As the new Dean of HASS, working alongside the College's 200+ faculty, I am committed to ensuring that the College has an exciting, cutting-edge curriculum, a research and creative environment focused on society's needs, and, above all, an educational philosophy that is student-centered.
I encourage you to explore our departments and programs, examine our curricular offerings, and become acquainted with the research and creative scholarship of our dedicated faculty. Welcome to HASS!
